Energy Expenditure at Rest and During Exercise
نویسنده
چکیده
The immediate source for muscle contraction is delivered from splitting of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and a ‘free’ phosphate ion (P). This reaction is very fast and does not normally limit energy turnover andmuscle performance. However, the ATP stores in the muscles are very limited. The whole ATP pool would be emptied in only a few seconds of muscle contraction. Therefore ATP has to be continuously regenerated through other energy systems. These supporting energy systems are very effective and can keep the ATP concentration unchanged or only marginally lowered, even during heavy exercise. In essence, there are four such systems, with different speeds of reaction and capacities, which release energy for active phosphorylation of ADP to restore the ATP pool. They are (1) creative phosphate, (2) lactacid anaerobic metabolism, (3) aerobic metabolism and (4) adenylate kinase reactions.

Catecholamine release, growth hormone secretion, and energy expenditure during exercise vs. recovery in men.
We examined the relationship between energy expenditure (in kcal) and epinephrine (Epi), norepinephrine (NE), and growth hormone (GH) release. Ten men [age, 26 yr; height, 178 cm; weight, 81 kg; O(2) uptake at lactate threshold (LT), 36.3 ml. kg(-1). min(-1); peak O(2) uptake, 49.5 ml. kg(-1). min(-1)] were tested on six randomly ordered occasions [control, 5 exercise: at 25 and 75% of the diff...
متن کاملA 45-minute vigorous exercise bout increases metabolic rate for 14 hours.
INTRODUCTION The magnitude and duration of the elevation in resting energy expenditure after vigorous exercise have not been measured in a metabolic chamber. This study investigated the effects of inserting a 45-min vigorous cycling bout into the daily schedule versus a controlled resting day on 24-h energy expenditure in a metabolic chamber. METHODS Ten male subjects (age = 22-33 yr) complet...
متن کاملRating of Perceived Exertion as an Indicator of Exercise Intensity in Paraplegics
Background: Energy expenditure is of paramount importance in the assessment of usefulness of wheelchair for paraplegics. Despite widespread recognition of problems associated with currently available mobility systems for persons with spinal cord injuries, development of more efficient systems has been slow. Lack of a suitable and simple technique for the assessment of energy expenditure in par...
متن کاملEffects of capsinoid ingestion on energy expenditure and lipid oxidation at rest and during exercise
BACKGROUND The thermogenic and metabolic properties of capsinoids appear to mimic those of the more pungent sister compound capsaicin. However, few data exist on how capsinoid ingestion affects energy expenditure in humans and no data exist on its interaction with exercise. We aimed to determine how ingestion of capsinoids affected energy expenditure, lipid oxidation and blood metabolites at re...
متن کاملNo energy compensation at the meal following exercise in dietary restrained and unrestrained women.
The objective of this investigation was to compare the acute effects of exercise and diet manipulations on energy intake, between dietary restrained and unrestrained females. Comparisons of two studies using an identical 2 x 2 repeated-measures design (level of activity (rest or exercise) and lunch type (high-fat or low-fat)) including thirteen dietary unrestrained and twelve restrained females...

Introduction & Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the resting energy expenditure and metabolic efficiency before and after of aerobic exercise in spastic cerebral palsy children (mean age of 11 years) and also to compare with those of normal children. Materials & Methods : Fifteen dipelegia spastic cerebral palsy children (experimental group) participated in exercise–rehabilita...
